Hunters inside Riding Trails at Camp....<--Posted Tuesday, November 27, 2007 by Gary
"Gary – I don’t know if anyone else has reported this, but this past weekend I went biking at Camp and the police officer at the sign-in desk mentioned that another biker encountered a hunter on the trails. When the biker told the hunter he was in a non-hunting area (not even CLOSE) he was promptly told to shut up and move along because he was interfering with his hunting. Needless to say, a little increased awareness won’t hurt anyone. The police officer said if anyone else encountered any problems to report them and provide any information they have about the hunters. Just thought I should pass on the information. Have a great holiday and happy riding.

Lauren G."

Many thanks to Lauren, we should all be aware that it is the season and even though hunters are not allowed in our area, they do wander in from time to time. Never continue to ride if you encounter hunters. Always report to the police where and when you saw the hunters. It may save your life or the life of someone else.

Happy Holidays,
Gary Lamb

 BACA Meeting - Dec 6th - 7:15 PM....<--Posted Monday, November 26, 2007 by Gary
From the BACA site....

"Mark you calendars for the next BACA meeting, December 6th at 7:15 p.m. at the Oyster Bar, 3003 W. Markham. North Little Rock Mayor Pat Hays will be our featured speaker and will update us on what North Little Rock has planned for bicyclists. Mayor Hays is responsible for making the north side of the River a bicyclist's delight, with beautiful River trail and trails through Burns Park. As a further measure of support for bicyclists, Mayor Hays had the rail tracks covered for the Big Dam Bridge 100. Please plan on attending this important meeting to show Mayor Hays our appreciation and to hear what exciting new plans Mayor Hays has for further trail development. As usual, there will be good food and good company."

Bikes For Tykes

It’s hard to believe that another year is drawing to a close and that Christmas is quickly approaching. We all recognized how fortunate we are to have the ability, money and time to ride our bikes and to pursue our passion for the sport of cycling.

Every year around this time, our friends at Chainwheel bike shop (www.chainwheel.com), with assistance from the Arkansas Bicycle Club, hosts the Bike For Tykes bicycle donation program. As a part of this program, we obtain used serviceable bikes for donation to several charitable organizations. After receiving the bikes, volunteers from our cycling community help clean and perform minor servicing on the bikes. As always, we need your help to make this program a success. Specifically, we need the following:

1. We need bicycle donations. We will accept bikes of all sizes and types. The bikes should be in serviceable condition, although we can perform basic repairs, adjustments, tire/tube replacements, grip replacements, cleaning and lubrication. A trained mechanic will be on hand to make any complicated repairs and to perform a final safety check on each bike. Of course, we would welcome new bikes also. Donated bikes can be taken to Chainwheel, located at, 10300 Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, AR 72227. (501-224-7651) Bike donations make a great office or church project- please let us know how you can help.

2. We need six to ten volunteers on two different nights to assist with cleaning and adjusting the bikes. You do not need to have mechanical skills- just a desire to help out and not mind the smell of a little green cleaner (you may actually start to like the smell after a few hours!)

We do not have an exact date yet, but we anticipate starting within the next two weeks-meeting on one Tuesday and one Thursday night. The work will be performed at Chainwheel. Food and drinks will be provided for the volunteers.

I’m sure many of us remember the magic of finding a bicycle under the Christmas tree when were kids (any maybe even as adults!) Now it is our turn to help spread that magic to deserving children in our own community. Thanks in advance for your help making this years BFT program a success. We will post the exact dates soon.

Best wishes and hope you have a safe and happy holiday season,
Monty Cole

Wounded Warrior Ride Today<--Posted Thursday, November 8, 2007 by Gary
On Nov. 8th, there will be a Soldier Ride beginning at War Memorial Stadium, Little Rock, at 11:00 AM and ending at the USS Razorback at Riverfront Park in North Little Rock. These soldiers are casualties of the current war and are amputees. They are coming from military hospitals, released for this day, to ride special bikes to raise awareness of the Wounded Warriors and to foster their own recovery. One of the riders is from the 39th Brigade (due to return to Iraq this spring) and has lost both legs. There will also be guest riders. There will be about 13 soldier riders plus the guest riders. They will ride city streets and go over the Big Dam Bridge. These Soldiers need people along the route cheering them on. The Soldier Ride is part of their healing process - and cheering them on and supporting them is part of it too.

Wouldn't it be terrible if there are only a handful of people to witness this? Or wouldn't it be fantastic if it was standing room only and thousands were there to witness it? Let these soldiers know that we appreciate their sacrifice for us. From their web-site https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org

"The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Rides cycling programs give severely wounded servicemen and women the opportunity to re-invigorate their bodies and uplift their spirits. Soldier Ride provides each of the brave men and women who participate in our ride with the adaptive equipment they need to cycle, even if they are missing one or more limbs. Participation in our cycling and recreational events fosters the rehabilitation of the wounded by showing them that they can still lead active, independent lives and gives families the opportunity to reconnect outside of the hospital environment."
