Sponsor Needed For Next Month's CARP Cookout......<--Posted Monday, May 16, 2005 by Gary
June 1st is the date for our next cookout at Camp. However no one has stepped up to the plate to sponsor. You choose the menu, drinks, and bring entertainment if you want (I tend to be the entertainment when I cook). If you are interested call me Gary Lamb at 835-6721 or 551-0038. We will need to get together in the next week or so. These cookouts are a blast and not really all that expensive to put on. We make sure everyone knows who has sponsored that night’s event. So it's a write-off, easy enough. Call now and get your name on the list to help out.

Forest Service plan ignores Trail protection.....<--Posted Friday, May 13, 2005 by Gary
Thanks Mena Mike.....

Ouachita National Forest Management Plan Revision: The Ouachita National Forest is in the process of rewriting management objectives which are used to set basic directions for management of the forest. The old plan has a separate management category for trails and trail corridors, but none of the proposed alternatives to this old plan have any language which would guarantee protection of trails from ordinary forest procedures such as timber management and controlled burning. Bikers, as user of this trail system, feel that it is necessary that trails have their own management area just as streams have their own and developed recreation sites have their own and that clear language be included in any adopted plan which recognizes the value of trails and provides for their protection.

Things that you can do to express your concern:
1. Write your concerns on a post card and mail to the address below
2. E-mail your concerns to ouachita_plan@fs.fed.us
3.Write about your concerns in a short letter and mail to:

Ouachita National Forest-Plan Revision
P.O.Box 1270
Hot Springs, Ar, 71902

Be sure to include your mailing address even if you choose to e-mail. Points to emphasis: I am a trail user, volunteer, etc. and the trail system is important to me and my family. Recreation in general is important to Arkansas and should get more attention in forest management. Trails and trail corridors MUST be protected from damage due to timber and controlled burn procedures. Be polite, the people reading the messages probably agree with you. The deadline for comments is May 20 but I THINK that it has been extended by one week.
The entire plan is available at www.fs.fed.us/r8/ouachita

 BACA Meeting - 7 p.m., Thursday, May 5, Oyster Bar...<--Posted Wednesday, May 4, 2005 by Gary
Reminder:
BACA Meeting - 7 p.m., Thursday, May 5, Oyster Bar, 3003 W. Markham

The BACA meeting for Thursday, May 5 should be of great interest to anyone who has ever thought of commuting to work by bicycle or who is simply curious about the whys, wheres, hows & rewards of bike commuting. Those questions & more will be addressed by a panel of BACA member bike commuters who come from varying work environments, commuting routes and commuting experiences. The format will be more like an interview talk show than a series of presentations which should make for lively & interesting program. Questions from the audience will also be encouraged.

The bicycle commuter program is part of BACA’s celebration of Bike to Work Month which concludes with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20. We need everyone possible to participate in Bike to Work Day to demonstrate that there is support in Central Arkansas for using the bicycle for transportation & to promote bicycling in general. Past Bike Work Days have been a great time for all involved & this year’s event promises to top the past.

Please don’t forget that we are in the middle of the fundraising campaign which is BACA’s only source of financial support. To involve as many bicyclists, trail users & supporters as possible in BACA, we charge no dues & rely on our annual fund drive to meet operating expenses. Just this past week we have paid the liability insurance premium that makes events like Bike to Work Day feasible & have paid BACA’s dues to participate in national bicycle organizations from which we receive significant benefit in terms of information & support. If you are concerned about maintaining a viable voice for bicycle advocacy in central Arkansas, & haven’t already made a contribution, please make a donation to BACA if possible. Send your check to BACA, 11140 Rivercrest Drive, Little Rock, AR 72212. No amount is too small to help BACA.

For those of you who have been waiting for extra-large BACA t-shirts, they should be available at the meeting. Thanks. Hope to see you Thursday night.

Ken
